THE SUBMISSION WINDOW IS OPEN!

 THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED!

If you're late to the party, here are posts one, two and three on #XmasinJuly.

The submission window is open 6am to 3pm EST and you'll receive an auto response to let you know we received your entry. If you don't get one, leave a comment and I'll fish it out of the spam : )

The email address is lottiehumphries14(at)yahoo(dot)co(dot)uk

Format it as if you're sending to an agent: Query and then first 500 words in the body of the email. Put your name, the name of the ms, and the genre in the subject line please. It should look like this:

Ruth Lauren Steven: THE CRACKS IN EVERYTHING (YA contemporary)

You can address your query 'Dear Agents' - as long as you promise to NEVER, EVER do this in an actual query to an agent!

You won't be ignored/disqualified/paraded through the streets in shame if you were at work or something and didn't see this post. If you get the auto response, we have your entry and we promise to read it.

Another thing you need to know is that if you're one of our 30 and Judith Engracia makes a request for your work PLEASE SEND IT STRAIGHT AWAY! (I know, that's going to be tough, right?) She's coming over to London on the 20th and wants her Kindle loaded up with the material beforehand. (On a related note HOW COOL IS THAT?!)

Good luck all. See you on the other side of the slushpile!

Christmas in July: A few more details

As you know, Michelle Krys is co-hosting Christmas in July with me, and today we have a few more details for you.

First of all, if you missed the first post, you can find it here.

Now for the exciting bits :) We already told you you'd need a query letter and the first 500 words of your completed ms to enter. We'll both be reading ALL the entries (and possibly fighting over our favourites.) I'm kidding (I'm not, and I'm pretty sure I have the weight advantage).

Anyway, once we've come to a dignified and amicable decision (seriously, I fight dirty), we're going to help you edit your entry until it is a many spendoured thing. Not that you HAVE to take our advice - it's your work. But the advice will be there :)

So because we'll need time to read all the entries and you might need to time to polish them up after our suggestions, the timeline is going to look like this:

Next post - 2nd July. This one will reveal our ten agents!

Submission window - 9th July between 6am and 3pm EST. Submissions should be sent to lottiehumphries14(at)yahoo(dot)co(dot)uk. I'll set up an auto response so you'll know we've received your submission.

13th July - the 30 writers chosen by us will be posted and notified.

18th July - after polishing, the entries go live on our blogs for the entire week and requests will be made!!

Don't forget to use the hastag #XmasinJuly on Twitter!

Quick post for a cool contest!

Yeah, I know I promised a reduction in the amount of exclamation marks, but cool things keep happening (!)

My writerly friend and fellow Greenhouse author Natalie C Parker, just sold her debut YA (which you should check out by clicking here). It's called BEWARE THE WILD and it sounds fascinating, which is why I added it on Goodreads. What do you mean, I'm adding as many links as I can in one post just to amuse myself? How dare you.

So Natalie is holding a cool contest to go with the cool news. Want to win an Arc of this?

All you have to do is click on Natalie's name above. That will take you straight to the post on her blog where you can enter!

There's more. It's ANNOTATED!!
The Curiosities includes the stories and each author’s comments, critiques, and kudos in the margins. Think of it as a guided tour of the creative processes of three acclaimed authors.

How cool would it be to own this? How much would you like me to stop using the word cool? *Both of these things could happen if you go over to Natalie's blog right now!

*Only one of these things could happen if you go over to Natalie's blog right now.

A few more details on the AGENT-JUDGED CONTEST :)

So here's where I made the first announcement about the contest. And because I want to give you plenty of time to prepare, here are the next set of details.

I'll be having two submission windows open on the 18th April, which is the day I started my blog last year with this scintillating post.

You'll be needing a query letter and the first five pages of your ms to send to me. At least 10 entries will be chosen  - by me - to skip the slushpile and be seen by an agent. Winners will then be chosen by said lovely agent!

I'll post again soon with details of the submission windows and instructions of where to send your entries!

Query Tips. Get ready for the AGENT JUDGED CONTEST!

Next month it's my blogiversary and to celebrate, I'm holding an agent-judged contest!!

It will be open to all MG and YA fiction, and to enter you'll need a completed manuscript and a query letter. This will be open to EVERYBODY - it doesn't matter if you've entered one of my competitions before.

Now I can't help you with the completed ms (not even if you bribe me with Rocket Dog shoes or orchids), but I can offer some QUERY TIPS so you have the best chance of winning one of the fabulous prizes.

My first tip is this: Read the Query Shark blog. ALL OF IT. I'm a big fan of the Query Shark Formula, which goes like this (and no I don't have to look it up - it's committed to memory and internalised):

What does the mc want?

What's going to get in her way?

What choice/dilemma does she face?

What terrible thing is going to happen if she chooses A; what terrible thing is going to happen if she doesn't.

You can see how I used that formula here and I'm going to give you another example that will let me talk about what WON'T work too.

This is the query I wrote (and edited, and edited, re-wrote, deleted, wrote, edited, re-wrote and edited) for my first novel.

Ana’s had her foot on the gas pedal of the self-destruct truck ever since her mother’s murder. In a last-chance foster placement before she turns eighteen, Ana vows to dust off her self-control and keep her big mouth shut. Blending in at school is easy. Even a spot of casual stalking can’t hurt - unless her new best friend is crushing on the boy in question too.

When Ana overhears said gorgeous creature, Dev, talking with her own shrink, and about her no less, she ditches her new policy of thinking before acting. A recon mission takes Ana to the graveyard adjoining Dev’s place. Instead of answers, she gets a run in with a Dark Angel whose sole purpose is making Ana a permanent resident of the cemetery. Dev saves her life, and Ana learns her fascination stems from a link stronger than attraction; Dev is her Guardian Angel. Ana’s at the epicentre of a battle, and if she wants to save herself and Dev, she needs to find out why.

As Ana’s schemes lead toward her final confrontation with the Dark Angel, she discovers Dev has concealed the real purpose behind his protection. If that’s not messed up enough, she finds out the angels are connected to the reason she’s spent a lifetime in foster care. To bring down the Dark Angel, Ana must make a choice: trust Dev and face her long-suppressed past, or sever their bond and shatter a love that would define her future.

*Blush*

And in case you're wondering, it got three requests for partials and seventy two rejections before I shelved it. The reason I'm showing you this is so that you can see that following the formula and writing what, if I'm honest, I still think is a half-decent query, is not the only thing that matters.

The reason this query failed is because the premise of the book wasn't unique enough. I hadn't read many YA books at the time and I didn't know this.

I also think this query has a voice that wasn't present in the pages. Poor Ana - she just didn't have what it takes.

There are lots of places where you can find out that your query should be about 250 words, and that you should type it straight into the email rather than copy/paste because that will screw with your formatting. I'm not going to repeat all that here.

What I am going to say is that you should use the tone and voice of your ms to write your query.

You should know what's out there on the shelves already.

And you should read agent's submission instructions and blogs - you can find out a lot about what they're looking for and what they've seen a lot of.

More details on the competition will follow soon! In the meantime, polish up your query, make sure your MG/YA ms is in the shape you want an agent to see it in, and tell anyone and everyone who writes to come and join in because there may be more than one agent judging, and there WILL be more than one prize : D

It's competition time!

This competition is now closed. Thanks for taking part. Next month's will be something different again :)

It's time for February's crit round because I <3 ripping your work to shreds helping you out with my sage advice and whatnot.

This one's going to be a beta-reading-of-your-ms competition and it will work a little differently to the others that I've held.

1) This is for YA writers only. It can be any genre, but this month is all about the YA, so no adult or MG entries on this one please.

2) You need to be a follower of this blog for this one. I don't normally insist on this, and I may not in the future, but the rules are a little different this month!

3) All you need to do is put your name, the name of your ms and your email address below and I'll beta read the first 500 hundred words of your YA ms. If you bring a friend to the party, ie you tell another YA writer about the competition and they join this blog, then you get a 1000 word beta read. All you need to do is put their name in the comments section to tell me they joined because of you : ) If you bring two friends, I'll do 1500 words for you.  If said friends/new followers want to enter this month's contest, then that's great - they need to follow these rules too : )

If you won one of my other competitions in the last three months, then please let someone else take the slot, because I won't choose you! Otherwise, go ahead : )

Ok, that's it. I'm not going to do the usual 'I'll get it back to you in a week' thing because I don't know how many words I'm going to be critting and I like to be really shreddy thorough.

Good luck!

Competition time!

This competition isn't one of mine, (although I'm holding one VERY soon) this is one run by my lovely writerly friend Gemma Cooper, Literary Agent at The Bright Literary Agency.

Here's the link to the blog launch and competition. And check out those prizes!

What do you have to do?

Just tell us in the comments what types of things you would like to see on our blog - what sorts of posts are going to be helpful?

There are two prizes:
Commenter prize - One random commenter will win a first chapter critique or critique of a full picture book.
Follower Prize - One random follower will win a critique.
  • If we get 50 followers by the end of the contest, you will win a one chapter/one picture book critique.
  • If we get 100 followers by the end of the contest, you will win a two chapter/two picture book critique!
  • And if we get over 150 followers you will get a three chapter/three picture book critique!!

All critiques will be done by Gemma Cooper, Literary Agent. Winners to be decided by random number generator. Competition closes on 21st February 2012.
(The above is taken straight from The Bright Literary Agency blog, so you need to click on the link and do your commenting over there! Although you're most welcome to leave me comments too, you won't win anything from me - not just yet anyway : ) )
Good luck!

New Year Query crit contest!

This contest is now closed! Winners announced above : )

So, as promised, here it is! Wanna win a query crit from me? See the little gift tag on the present there? It's got your name on it. Well, maybe.

New year, new set of rules for this one.

Firstly, I'm going to open it up for the whole week.

Secondly, you must have the query down to 300 words or less all by your lonesome, or with help from voodoo rituals. Your choice.

This is my little New Year pressy to you, so that's it for rules.

All you need to do to enter is put your name, the name and genre of your ms and your email address in the comments section below.  I'll choose a winner, or maybe two, from the list and critique the hell out of your query.

And like my other contest, I'm not going to insist you follow my blog to enter, but it's appreciated if you do. I'm not going to insist that you tweet about it either, but it's cool if you do.

Good luck to all, and Happy New Year to my lovely followers. I'll close the contest after one week and choose a winner or three :D Plus I'll get your query back to you within a week. It's all good, right?

Quick contest to say Merry Christmas!

The contest is now closed. Thanks to everyone for participating :) Winner(s) posted above!

In the Christmassy spirit of Christmas I thought I'd throw a little contest and offer to beta read the first 3,000 words of your manuscript.

All you need to do to enter is write your name, the title and genre of your ms and your email address in the comments section. The contest will close at 7pm GMT 24th December when I'll pick a winner. I'll read the first 3k words and get them back to you in a week : )

RULES:
1) This is for unagented writers.

Um, yeah, that's the only rule (see Christmassy Christmas spirit - I’m doing this to help.) It can be a finished ms, or a WiP.

I'm not going to insist that you follow my blog to enter, though I'd love it if you did. I'm not going to insist you post it on your own blog to let other writers know or tweet this post either but I'd love it if you did :D

Now here's a pic of something cute while you polish up your 3k words for me to get my hands on.

Mini-post for a competition!

See the little button to your right? Yeah, the yellow one that looks like a post-it. My friend Joe is hosting a competition: review a book in 30 words or less to win a 30 dollar Amazon voucher!

(See how I'm practicing brevity with this post? Clever.)
